Posted by: heuristik on 01/10/2008 16:23:35
Updated: 01/10/2008 16:26:42 (Read: 5)

We have Fedora FC8 installation DVDs, for both the i386 and the x86_64 architectures.
On one update, to a Compaq laptop, the install process hung, non-destructively when Anaconda was "resolving dependencies." This turned out to be a common bug.

[ Full Backup ] Full backup of Networker Clients begins tonight, 12/31

Posted by: heuristik on 12/31/2007 19:45:07
Updated: 12/31/2007 19:45:44 (Read: 4)
We're about to start a full backup of all of our Networker clients. Please leave your machines running. Any computers that get missed will be backed up as soon as this full backup series is done. One computer, Ambry, will be backed up after this current set. This backup can take several days and precludes daily backup, so until this is done, make sure you save extra local copies.

And, Happy New Year.

[ Operating Systems ] Vista and Partners Wireless -- NOT!

Posted by: heuristik on 11/20/2007 20:30:44
Updated: 11/20/2007 20:30:44 (Read: 13)
According to Mike Lee, BWH/Partners Research Computing:

Partners Wireless uses Cisco LEAP authentication. Microsoft and
Intel no longer support LEAP under Windows Vista. If you have a Vista
based laptop, you will not be able to use Partners wireless

We don't have any information beyond this.    DFCI/RC will keep you posted.

[ Sequencing Software ] DNAStar -- temporary fix?

Posted by: heuristik on 11/19/2007 15:26:04
Updated: 11/19/2007 15:26:04 (Read: 8)
Jeff Engelking, our contact at DNAStar, has provided us, on a temporary basis, with a 200-user DNAStar license, which we'll keep until January 9.   During that time, we'll monitor the license server to see just how many users we have, and purchase an appropriate number of additional licenses if it turns out that the probem you are seeing is simply a result of to small a number of DNAStar licenses.

[ sequencing software ] DNAStar Users, take note...

Posted by: heuristik on 11/14/2007 12:14:07
Updated: 11/14/2007 12:14:07 (Read: 6)
We have 20 network licenses for DNA-Star.   What we're now seeing is that by 9:00 to 10:00 in the moring all of the licenses are checked out and remain out until we reboot the server.   This suggests a couple of things to me.

o  People are nervous about getting a license, so they startup DNAStar when they come arrive in the morning.

o  DNAStar users don't quit when they're not using the programs.

[ Mac Attack? ] Is the Mac "fortress" gone?

Posted by: heuristik on 11/05/2007 14:54:57
Updated: 11/05/2007 16:36:40 (Read: 9)
Just in case any of our Mac users were just a teeny bit too smug about the alleged invulnerbility of their OS/X computers, word
is that there is a hack, in the form of a "dmg" Quicktime enhancement, the reroutes your web connections to Phishing sites. To read the full article, see this article at eWeek. Remember, though, a user has to perform a deliberate action here for this trojan to download. And must also give the password of an administrative account.

Posted by: heuristik on 09/25/2007 17:23:20
Updated: 09/25/2007 17:26:13 (Read: 25)

From Reddi Galli:

We would like to re-instantiate the abcd-bioinfo meetings and talks. I am posting this to general ABCD (with Lenny’s permission) group to urge all who are interested to subscribe to abcd-bioinfo group. As we all know that there is so much cross talk between various fields and subscribing to abcd-bionfo would be beneficial even if you're not a bio-informatics person.
